Looking for Books?

Hello, Yukon educators.  In  the spring of 2009, when I was seconded to the Department of Education as Literacy/Assessment Consultant, I started a wiki so that I could put all the useful literacy-related sites I can find in one place.  However, I eventually realized that a website would be more effective.  There is a huge amount of information out there, but these are the sites that I like and that I think will be most helpful to educators working in K to 12.

Sometimes the menu hides.  I have a few pages here: adolescent, early and emergent, and so on.  Hit home to see the list.

International Reading Association.  This is probably the oldest and biggest nonprofit organization committed to literacy, with over 70 000 members worldwide.  Through IRA, you can subscribe to The Reading Teacher, the Journal of Adolescent and Adult Literacy, Reading Research Quarterly, and Reading Online.  The IRA publishes books and DVDs on reading and writing.  As well, the IRA in conjunction with the American  National Council of Teachers of English provides hundreds of lesson plans through ReadWriteThink.  IRA also provides resources through Reading Online. The IRA and the  Children's Book Council co-sponsor the annual Children's Choices booklists.

BC Teachers of English Language Arts This is a BC Provincial Specialist Association, made of teachers from BC and Yukon.  Some familiar names: Leyton Schnellert is a Past President, and Joanne Panas contributes to their journal, English Practice.  There are lots of useful links on this site.  Check out the info on the fall 2010 conference, "Building Pathways," which will be held in Richmond in October.

BC Primary Teachers' Association is also a BC Provincial Specialist Association.  Their site includes lots of useful links.  There are two conferences coming up, a kindergarten conference in August, and a primary conference in October.

Orca Publishers Western Canadian children's book publisher.  Many downloadable teachers' guides available.

Novel Guide "is the premier free source for literary analysis on the web providing study guides as an educational supplement."  This is one of Microsoft's Top 14 Sites for Students.

Shakespeare Online  This site was started more than ten years ago by an English Honours grad from the U of A.  It's one of Microsoft's Top 14 for Students.

Royal Shakespeare Company This links to their education page.

The Gutenberg Project , which provides free downloadable books in the US, is another of Microsoft's Top 14.  I am not sure whether Gutenberg Canada is affiliated with the original site or not.  Another source of downloadable books comes from the University of Pennsylvania: The Online Books Page

Poets.org from the Academy of American Poets.

New York City Schools Teacher Resources has lots of interesting links.

Web English Teacher  I am not sure of this site's pedigree, but it's got lots of interesting links.

Teachers and Writers Collaborative This is a New York-based organization that "seeks to educate the imagination by offering innovative creative writing programs for students and teachers, and by providing a variety of publications and resources to support learning through the literary arts."

Scholastic Teachers' Page Scholastic Publishers have some free resources on this site that might be useful.  For example, under Student Activities, there's a free kids' online dictionary. Word Wizard Dictionary I know it's a commercial site, and they would like us to buy things...but it's worth checking out.  Laura Robb Blog  This blog has some useful tools for teaching reading.

Instructional Strategies Online  A great site from Saskatoon Public Schools.  Check out the Instructional Methods pages for lots of literacy-related suggestions: Book Talks, Picture Word Inductive Method, Probable Passages and kazoodles more.

Reading Rockets This is an American site, funded by the U.S. Department of Education, Office of Special Education Programs.

Curriculum Services Canada  Services des programmes d'études Canada  This is not specifically literacy...but you can get money!  Grants are available to teachers for resource development. The available free teacher-made resources are presently all in English.

Indigo Love of Reading Foundation Indigo Bookstores thinks there is a crisis in Canada's school libraries, and they would like you to help them do something about it.  They do offer three-year grants to qualifying schools.  Indigo Love of Reading Grant    Fondation Indigo pour l'amour de la lecture

Writers in Electronic Residence  "WiER connects students across Canada with writers, teachers and one another in an animated exchange of original writing and commentary."  This sounds interesting, but there is a fee of $650 per term per class.
